Apple Dumplings
Ingredients:
In a saucepan add -
1-1/2 cups sugar
1-1/2 cups water
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
6-10 drops red food coloring
Bring above ingredients to a boil
3 Tbs butter or margarine
2 cups sifted enriched flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
6 medium, whole apples, pared and cored
Directions:
Remove saucepan from heat and
add butter. Sift dry ingredients and cut in shortening to pea
size. Add milk all at once and stir until flour is moistened.
Roll out onto a lightly floured board to between 1/8" and
1/4" thick. It should be an approximate 18" x 12"
rectangle.
Cut 6" squares. Place a
whole apple in each square. Sprinkle each apple generously with
sugar. Moisten edges of square and fold corners to center and
pinch edges together. Place 1" apart in an ungreased 11-1/2"
x 7-1/2" x 1/2" baking pan. Pour syrup over dumplings;
sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 375° for 35 minutes
or till apples are done. Serve with warm cream.
NOTE:
If you wish you may use 1/2 apple sliced, in each of the square
pastry.
